BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION
Hi, I’m Oluwafemi. I’m a product designer and a frontend developer. I am constantly looking for opportunities where I can collaborate to impact and change the world through tech and design.
I started my career 4 years ago as a full-stack developer where I contributed to solving problems as an intern in a software development company utilizing tools like Microsoft Visual Studio and creating commands using the C# language.
Amid that period, I picked up design tools like Photoshop and Illustrator to create artworks, because I discovered the power and the beauty that stems from intersecting/fusing tech and art (design). Over the next 2years, I started designing and developing for the web, and also took illustration gigs for friends and non-governmental organizations.
I was born in a small town in the city of Ibadan where I lived and schooled, having bagged my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, I moved to Lagos, where am based presently.
AN OVERVIEW
My first job was in 2015 at Elkanah Technologies Limited where I started out as a full-stack developer. I worked with senior developers and other colleagues to deliver an Accounting Management System and furthermore, contributed to building and developing websites and applications to clients as per business needs. This was my first experience working in a cooperate tech environment and it helped me understand the concepts of Software Development, Design Thinking and Product Management.
While serving my fatherland, I was posted to Christian Embassy International – a non-governmental organization, to work as an IT support officer, where I oversaw and managed the IT department, and also engaged with other ad-hoc roles. Serving and working here, really built up my adaptability to working under pressures and also solidify my interest in volunteering to impactful courses.
Fast-forward to April 2018 – after my service year. I volunteered to join Codenonia as a State-Lead, where I lead a team of developers, facilitators, and educators to train teens on how to code and design in my state. Prior to this incredible opportunity, I have been freelancing as a product-designer at Credutal. However, during this period, in a stepwise manner, have begun cutting a specialty as a front-end engineer in a very much organized condition that would bolster growth and learning. I have since contributed to, and championed several projects which include websites, web and mobile app designs.
AS A DESIGNER
Ever since the beginning of my career, have been designing. – From Logos to UIs, Mock-Ups, and Wireframes. Even more important, I enjoy designing for the web, mobile, and as of late, am entirely intrigued by artificial-intelligence and virtual reality design. I love every single stage of the design thinking process. – Right from Generating a problem statement, to Observing the users, to Empathizing and exploring the problem, then to Iterating Design Ideas, and finally to evaluating and testing ideas.
To help improve myself, I have taken a #DesignChallenge, where I refactor and redesign any website or app of my choice, seldom via recommendations, as the case may be. This was basically propelled by Adobe and Figma community, with good reads from Invision’s Blog and A List Apart. Some of these works can be found in my portfolio section.
As a general rule, I begin off my design process by sketching using pencil and markers (traditional thingy) before switching to design tools. I love to use Adobe XD or Figma for my UI designs and seldom, prototype with their inherent tool. I mostly do high-end prototyping with Protopie and illustrate with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
AS A DEVELOPER
Whether it's translating design mockups into pixel-perfect web and/or mobile screens, or developing user interface from start to finish with no prior design, I enjoy combining the power of appropriate HTML semantics with well-written CSS codes to create good-looking and functional solutions. I'm a sucker for good, comprehensive, maintainable and scalable codes, and I enjoy developing from scratch.
Over time, I’ve worked with a couple of frameworks for front-end development and they include; Twitter Bootstrap, Vue and recently React and D3 for Data Visualization. I’m also very familiar and comfortable with development tools and version control systems such as Git
I like to refer myself to as a design technologist with an eye for details and precision. As such, When I see awful designs, improper use of spacing, terrible data presentation, design irregularity, as well as usability oversights that err user's experience, I quail.
I’m a practicing believer of lifelong learning process thus, I grok, build, re-learn and update myself on tools I use.
MOTIVATION-MISSION-VISION
My motivation stems from the inspiration I draw from the lifestyle of people I admire (my mentors); Dann Petty – Dann’s idea of creating something epic through the Epicurrence movement inspires me and makes me want to do more. Jon Yablonski - A senior in the design industry setting the pace and curating laws for others to follow. Afolabi Ayodele – I owe the genesis of my career in tech to this great individual, and the stuff he’s built and building with his team wows me.
My vision is to be in a world where everyone does what they truly love and contribute with their full potential; where every individual uses their natural virtuoso and awesomeness to build product that instills loving, wonderful and lasting experience on the user.
Ultimately, to impact lives through innovation and contribution to courses that pursue that same goal.
My Mantra – ‘Live love, Create what you love with love; a wonderful world indeed!’ – Your Brother/Next New Hire - Oluwafemilove 👨🏻💻
